Canine Bowen Technique

The Healing Touch:

In the ever-evolving world of pet care and wellness, an intriguing discipline is gaining recognition among dog owners; Canine Bowen Technique. A gentle yet effective form of bodywork, this technique is tailored specifically for our four-legged companions, combining art and science to promote healing, relaxation, and overall well-being.

The charm of the Bowen Technique lies in its non-invasive nature. Dogs do not need to be anesthetized or subjected to rigorous interventions. Instead, sessions are calm and soothing, typically conducted in their own environment that puts your pet at ease. With subtle movements and pauses, the body is prompted to respond—as though a switch has been flipped, igniting a cascade of restorative effects.

Guided by their instincts, dogs have an innate understanding of when they need healing and, importantly, when they’ve had enough. During each session, there comes a moment of revelation—like an encore’s gentle hush when all eyes turn to the stage. It’s here, in this embrace of presence, that the whimsy of choice emerges. With a soft glance or a subtle step toward the door, dogs let us know when they feel complete, ready to conclude their healing journey for that day.

Every departure is different, shaped by each canine’s personality and unique narrative. Some may bound off with eagerness, tails wagging furiously as if to say, “More please!” Others might take a slow, grateful stretch before stepping gracefully into the waiting world outside. Their choice marks the end of a chapter in their journey—the assurance that they’ve received enough love, guidance, and healing for now.

What is Canine Bowen Technique?

Inspired by the Human Bowen Technique, which was developed by Australian therapist Tom Bowen, Canine Bowen Technique is an innovative therapy adapted by Sally and Ron Askew to support dogs in conditions of stress, pain, or restricted movement. It involves a series of gentle, rolling movements over specific muscle groups and energy points. The unique nature of this technique allows the therapy to influence the body in a holistic way, stimulating the self-healing mechanisms that lie within every dog.

Benefits of the Canine Bowen Technique.

Many dogs have found that it has many holistic benefits from Bowen as it does for humans.

It can help them with things such as:

*rehoming stress; it helps them by relaxing them from any past trauma that they may have been through, by using a calming technique means reduced anxiety and stress levels, creating a happier and more relaxed companion

*fireworks, anxiety, thunderstorms

*behaviour, brought on by stress

*illness and degenerative diseases by helping to relieve pain by stimulating their circulation and reducing tension.

*old age, to help them reduce stress and promote relaxation to live out their last years as best as they can.

*minor sprains or strains

*can help to boost recovery from surgeries, and enhance overall mobility.

The Process: Gentle Movements for Deep Healing.

During a typical session, a certified Canine Bowen Practitioner will assess your dog’s physical condition and overall demeanor. The technique itself is remarkably simple yet profoundly impactful. Soft, rhythmic movements are made with the Practitioner's hands, applying gentle pressure on muscles, tendons, and ligaments—encouraging relaxation and the release of tightness. Each series of movements is interspersed with breaks, allowing the dog to absorb the changes and respond to the technique.

This comforting approach is so gentle that many dogs can fall asleep during the session, melting into an experience that eliminates stress and promotes a rejuvenated state of being. The effects can be deeply tranquil, fostering a lasting bond between the animal and the Practitioner.

Is Canine Bowen Therapy Right for Your Dog?

Almost any dog can benefit from the nurturing embrace of the Bowen Technique, from our sprightly puppies to our wise senior companions. However, it is always advisable to consult a qualified Veterinarian or an experienced Canine Bowen Practitioner before starting any new treatment. They can provide valuable insights on whether this gentle therapy could be a beneficial addition to your dog’s wellness routine.

What will it involve from the owner?

**Please note, Vets permission needs to be sought for first, prior to treatment being given and to have been vet checked within the last six months.

I work with the vets, not against the vets. If they decide that your dog is not suitable for a hands on technique, I will unfortunately be unable to help them.**
